This one's for you, Schneedle! is a poignant examination of the trials and tribulations of youth. Teens today cope with a multitude of obstacles to adulthood, and these challenges have been exacerbated by the peculiarities of modern life. The film portrays the struggle to follow one's dreams in an information-based workforce, the issue of premature parenthood and the splintered family ties that result, and the uncertainty, fear, and identity complexes bred by sexual confusion. The issue at the heart of the film, however, is that of teen suicide. Suicide is often attractive to troubled teens because it represents both an escape from the responsibilities of this world and the promise of a new and better one. This one's for you, Schneedle! sympathizes with the teenage psyche, but ultimately takes the existentialist point of view that there is no way out; our struggles here and now are all we have. True, the one attempted suicide in the film results in a phantasmagoric, action-packed journey across space and time - but "it's all just a movie," as Cody the Drifter is quick to remind us.
